Yes. We welcome applicants with a Master's degree in any quantitative discipline, provided you have solid knowledge of the foundations of machine learning and practical experience implementing and evaluating machine learning models in Python. A medical background is not required.

Yes, we welcome applications from all countries. Candidates from outside the EU/EFTA require a Swiss work permit, which is applied for once an offer has been accepted. This typically takes a few months, which we take into account when agreeing on a start date.

The working language of the lab is English. German is not required.

Yes. This is a fully funded position with an employment contract at the University of Bern. The annual gross salary for 2026 is CHF 50,042 (full time, including the 13th month salary), according to SNSF rates. No external scholarship is needed.

The contract runs for 3 years, with the possibility to extend by 1 year. The start date is as soon as possible or by agreement.

The project is not tied to a single disease. It will start from large, publicly available multimodal health cohorts combining imaging, wearable and clinical data.

The project will primarily use observational data, including treatment information as recorded in the cohorts (e.g. medication).
